I think everyone can relate to looking around high end interior shops or looking at luxurious furnishings online and wishing that your home looked the same. We understand that not everyone has the budget to have expensive home accessories and furniture, but that doesn’t mean that you can have a home that looks as if it has been taken straight from an interior studio. We have selected all our favourite tips to take your home from basic, to beautiful. If you need some inspiration on how to decorate your home, take a look at Katie Malik’s Portfolio, Interior Designer London.
A great way to change only one thing in your room, but make a big impact, is changing your lighting fixtures. If you want a big change, then opt for changing the light fitting for an accessory such as a chandelier style fixture or something louder than the space but still suits your style. This gives the room a luxurious flare as you haven’t got the standard lightbulb and shade lighting, and will give the room a different form of light. If you want to keep it simple, instead go for an oversized or patterned lampshade in colours and textures that convey glamour – this could be metals, jewel tones, or a luxury fabric such as velvet. This creates a focal point in your room and gives the glamorous touch.
Switch Out Your Hardware
Just because your furniture didn’t cost a fortune, doesn’t mean it should look cheap. You can easily transform your furniture by changing the hardware. We suggest switching out the drawer and cupboard handles for a pricier choice. Instead of spending the money on an expensive dresser, buy a cheaper option and then spend a bit more on new hardware. We would suggest using metals, such as copper or brushed metal, or intricate designs to make the piece appear more interesting. This will also create a unique on off design which will make people think you spent a pretty penny to get a bespoke piece.
Floor to Ceiling Curtains and Draping
This is a common decoration in luxury hotels that you can bring into your own home. When hanging your curtains or drapes, place the pole as high to the ceiling as possible. Then purchase curtains that hang longer than your window at the length of the floor to ceiling measurement of the space. This will make the ceilings feel higher and the space feel bigger and more grand. This is perfect for those who love the luxurious feel of a hotel and want to bring a little bit of expensive taste into their home.
In show homes, you always see lovely decorative pieces that transform a regular coffee table into a beautifully styled piece of furniture. By adding accessories such as bowls, candles, and flowers, you can turn your cheap table into a dressed feature of the room. It doesn’t have to be expensive to look expensive – by putting some care into arranging the items in your home, you can make your home look costly and lavish.
